J
acob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:10-17 ESV

A
rriving at the monastery gate on state highway 12

you will proceed up the driveway and over the brook,

winding among the avenue of trees past the cottage on the left, continuing on until you gently rise up to main building where the paved road forks. Veer right.

As you look to the East, God will bless you with a lovely vista of lush greenery,  farmlands and native forests covering the distant hills. This is traditionally the realm of the Ngāpuhi iwi, who span across the Hokianga to the Bay of Islands and South to Whangarei and Dargaville.

I
f you are visiting and will eat with us you will be

shown to our fellowship lounge room where you will wait

until the time to eat is announced. You will be advised whether or not the meal will be eaten with open conversation or eaten in Benedictine style silence.

The format for meals begins with each of us standing behind our allocated chair. Whilst standing an opening prayer is read aloud by all, concluding with the Glory Be bow.

We generally eat and drink without engaging conversation with one another whilst one of our number reads a passage for us to listen to the Lord’s heart for the duration of the meal.

When it appears that the meal has ended, the Responsible among us knocks  once on the table and we stand behind our chair, after which and say a closing  prayer complete with the Glory Be bow and then leave the refectory in silence.

The lunch meal is followed by a lengthy private time that concludes with the None Office, which is sung privately in cell. This is followed by the afternoon work period. During this time you are welcome to enjoy the Library, the Common room, the Sanctuary of the Father’s Blessing, or stroll around the grounds or engage in some prearranged activity.

V

isitors are most welcome to sfFJ monastery and

we welcome all visitors as christ himself visiting.

Visits are customarily pre-arranged as, because of the

solitary nature of our life, the monastery does not ordinarily

receive casual drop ins however, as it is with love, there are always

exceptions . . . and the last shall be as the first.
